The European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) acts immediately after a disaster, they are responsible for coordinating the resources in an emergency situation, whether it is a humanitarian or a natural catastrophe. More than 750 staff and field experts work at these offices to carry out need assessments.
In 2012, ECHO spent more than €1.18 billion. In 2011, ECHO distributed humanitarian aid worth €1.1 billion, representing less than 1% of the European Union´s total Budget. It also provided assistance to nearly 150 million people in over 80 countries outside the European Union.
